The Eastern Cape Provincial Archives and Records Services is the custodian of archives and records management in the province. It is within its mandate to preserve public records that have been generated through provincial administrative efforts, as well as non-public records that have been collected from the public through individual and group historical testimonies.
Due to demands presented by a technologically advancing world, older methods of records preservation are proving to be increasingly limited in their capacity to preserve and provide ease of access to records. Digitisation has been identified as a method that would be able to simplify and meet the task of records preservation and providing ease of access that is not limited by geographical location.
Digitisation can be defined as a process in which manual records are converted into digital format(s), thereby establishing channels for further preservation of records and provision of access to information through technological means.
